Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company (ADDH) has concluded the definitive agreement with Budapest-based Wizz Air Holdings to jointly establish Wizz Air Abu Dhabi

In a bourse filing, Wizz Air stated that the agreement is a major milestone in the launch of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, a new Emirati low-cost airline based in the UAE's capital.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi plans to start operations in H2 2020. The low-cost airline will focus on establishing routes to markets in which Wizz Air has existing, high growth operations such as Central, Eastern and Western Europe as well as the Indian subcontinent, Middle East and Africa, over the long run.

Additionally, the launch of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is in line with Abu Dhabi’s AED 50 billion accelerator programme, Ghadan 21, which is driving the emirate's development through investing in business, innovation and people.

HE Mohamed Hassan Al Suwaidi, the CEO of ADDH, said that in 2019 Abu Dhabi achieved a record high of 11.35 million visitors and a key driver for this is the connectivity that enables people to visit emirate easily and affordably.

Following the signing of the agreement, the Wizz Air Abu Dhabi development team has already initiated the process with the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority to obtain the carrier’s Air Operator Certificate and Operating License.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi will face competition from Air Arabia Abu Dhabi which is due to begin operations from Q2 2020.

In October 2019, SpiceJet signed an agreement with Ras Al Khaimah International Airport with plans to launch Delhi-Ras Al Khaimah flights in December 2019, the airline’s first overseas hub. The Indian low-cost carrier is yet to finalise plans as it awaits the mandatory regulatory approvals.
