US regulator sues 17 major banks over subprime bonds

The lawsuits by the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac , came as a surprise to investors, dragging down bank shares on Friday. Analysts say the move could add billions of dollars of legal costs at what could be the worst possible time for the financial industry.
