Stock market turmoil could hurt EMEA investments and operating holding company ratings, says S&P

After several years of buoyant equity markets, 2008 will be challenging for rated investment and operating holding companies in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), said Standard & Poor's Ratings Services in its industry report card titled ‘Equity market turbulence could pressure EMEA investment and operating holding company ratings’. Equity markets' volatility has increased significantly, share prices have tumbled, and valuation multiples for non-listed assets have declined. Consequently, the asset values of many investment and operating holding companies deteriorated considerably during the second half of 2007 and at the start of 2008.
