Ministry of Economy reveals plans to protect consumers
The initiative was discussed by the Supreme Committee for Consumer Protection at its sixth meeting, during which members also debated measures to manage food prices. Sultan al Mansouri, the Minister of Economy and Chairman of its supreme committee for consumer protection department said, “We are putting strong efforts and co-ordinating at all levels across retail outlets and local departments to ensure that consumers are protected and well covered.” This measure would be the latest to come from the ministry to protect consumers in a year which saw food prices and inflation hit record levels. The department has signed agreements with big supermarket retailers, including Carrefour and Lulu, to cap the prices of basic foods such as oil and flour.
