May you live in 'interesting times'!

A pair of new acronyms entered the global banking arena in 2011: G-SIFI and G-SIB; respectively globally systemically important financial institution and globally systemically important bank. An initial list of such institutions was published in November 2011 and will be updated annually. Data used to create the list was taken as of end-2009 so it is fairly safe to assume that the list will change! It is not fixed, there may be new entries and exits each year and the number of institutions on the list is not fixed. The present list contains only global systemically important banks (G-SIBs); future lists may also contain G-SIFIs that are not banking groups.
