London’s burning...
Riots, petrol bombs, violence… Though I’m used to hearing these words in this part of the world, they’re not usually about my home country. Back in the UK this week, gangs of youths have seethed through London’s streets leaving riot-ravaged neighbourhoods, burnt-out shops, torched cars and trashed streets in their wake. A family shop that had stood for generations in Croydon, survived the Great Depression and Hitler’s bombs, was burnt to the ground within hours. A victim of the violence lies in hospital fighting for life – his identity known only to the rioters who stole his wallet and mobile ‘phone. Ugly scenes of rioting and looting have spread to other cities, with pockets of violence erupting in Manchester, Nottingham and Birmingham.
