There is quite an old joke about non-executive directors – I first heard it almost ten years ago. The question is: What's the difference between a non-executive director and a supermarket trolley? The answer is, as anyone who has ever been shopping in a supermarket will know, that the trolley has a mind of its own and a limited capacity for food and drink.
